We are a family of 4. A 10 year old, a 7 year old and then my husband and I. Should we get 4 of each kind of controller or will 2 of each be plenty? The games we will be playing are Trauma Center Second Opinion, Mario Party, Smooth Moves, Wii Play and Cooking Mama.

Anyway, I reccomend buying 4 of each kind. Mario Party 8 is the most fun for company and family. So even though most are only good for 2 and taking turns, don’t cheap out because in the long run when you buy more games and have company over, you WILL thank yourself.
4 wii-motes and 4 nunchucks for maximum enjoyment!
You should probably get four nunchucks & wiimotes, just so everyone will be able to play games like Mario Party 8 together.
The Wii already comes with a controller and a nunchuck, so there’s one down.
If you’re going to get Trauma Center, you should get New Blood instead of Second Opinion. New Blood features co-op surgery mode, so two people can play at once.
Ideally, you should buy three remotes and three Nunchucks to make sure everyone gets a full remote set, but most of the games you mentioned only use the Wii Remote (with the exception of Trauma Center). So, you could probably just buy three remotes and one nunchuck now and wait to get two more nunchucks later.
2 would suffice but 4 would be best especially for mario party!
