How Do You Avoid Wii Getting Bricked When Using Wiikey?

I’ve read if you have a Wiikey, your console can get bricked if you run updates from some games.
If you have a Wiikey, is there any risk of downloading updates from within the Wii settings?
If you choose to never run updates from games, will those games still work properly?

Your console can get bricked if you run disc updates from *out-of-region* games. You should be able to block disc updates from the Wiikey config disc, supposedly if you’re running 1.9s. There’s also other non-hardware/homebrew apps that’ll block disc updates or remove them from the ISO (probably best not to name names here.)
If you have a Wiikey, downloading updates from within the Wii settings will remove the ability to install some homebrew apps like DVDx. It won’t affect the general functionality of the Wiikey, though. The update is mostly to prevent people who haven’t installed homebrew (and other apps) from getting into it, but doesn’t remove applications that have already been installed. However, if you want to update, there’s other “third-party” Wii firmware installers out there that will update the Wii to 4.0 without losing some of the mentioned functionality.
And if you choose to never run updates from games, as long as you’ve updated via some other method, from Nintendo, third-party Wii firmware installer, or “manually” updated the IOS and cIOS files yourself, you should never have to do a disc update. If you choose not to update at all, sooner or later you’ll run into a game that requires some kind of update.
Sorry I’ve kept it kind of vague, but people report detailed answers for abuse on here. Email.

It may knacker up your WiiKey updating from games themselves.. but.. if you install the Homebrew Channel using the Twilight Hack method – I would recommend installing Backup Launcher Gamma and running your games through that.
This kills the need to update from games meaning your WiiKey will never be broken :)
