If You Want to Buy the Best Wii Modchip, Don’t

Remember the days of cracking open your console, messing around with wires and chips, and finally getting that $50 modchip you bought through some sketchy vendor installed in your console?  This is a difficult and often dangerous process that many Wii owners have had to face due to the console’s limitations when compared to the PS3 and XBOX 360, which can already play DVDs, movies, and download games.   It was also very costly; between the modchip itself and the extra tools and parts you had to buy, you could end up paying $100 or more just to enable these basic capabilities on your Wii.

So here’s an interesting thought: if you’re trying to buy the best Wii modchip, don’t.  Here’s why: Many innovative developers have now produced software (“soft mods”) for the Wii console.  Now, if you want to enable your Wii to play DVDs and homebrew games, all you have to do is install a piece of software – and best of all, it only takes about 10-20 minutes to get it all set up. Unlike modchips, soft mods are also totally reversible.  If you don’t like the changes made to your Wii, you can undo them at any time. Soft mods are completely legal, unlike certain modchips which bypassed copyright measures to get illegal access to games.  Obviously, that’s a bad idea.  With soft mods, you don’t have to feel like you’re doing something underhanded just to get your Wii to do more. If you’re looking to buy the best Wii modchip, don’t buy a modchip at all.  Soft mods are easy to install, only run at about $20-30 (as opposed to the $50-100 you might spend for hard mods), and don’t compromise your Wii’s hardware at all.  Best of all, they let you get your Wii ready to download games and play movies in less than 20 minutes.
