Wii Play

Posted on May 7th, 2008 in UK Shopping by admin

Wii Play, alongside bundled launch title Wii Sports, is perhaps the one launch game that is most exemplary of Nintendo’s ‘gaming for all strategy’ with Wii The real bonus is that the game comes bundled with a spare Wii Remote, which is vital for you to fully enjoy the multiplayer action on offer.

Basically, Wii Play is comprised of nine very different mini-games, all designed to help you master the unique Wii Remote, plus at the same time providing hours of entertainment for both the hardcore gamer and his/her less hardcore family and pals. If you are buying a Wii then buying a copy of Wii Play along with the bundled controller is pretty much a no-brainer. Even if you tire of the mini-games in a few months time, then you still have the essential extra Wii Remote. And while all of the games can be played alone against an AI opponent, Wii Play is around a million times more fun when played with others.

So what of the games? The best, and the easiest for aging arcade fans to pick up and play, is Shooting Range, which does what it says on the tin. The game is reminiscent of the classic arcade/ NES Duck Hunt. It’s a basic ducks, balloons, clay pigeons, Wii-Mii-stealing aliens-shooting kind of a thing. You aim the Wii-Mote at the target on screen, and, erm, kill it. The game is hugely satisfying in two-player mode, as you both compete to shoot the maximum number of targets first. The fact that you have infinite ammo is also a bonus, although you soon find that blasting away willy-nilly doesn’t necessarily bag you a good score! Find Mii involves picking the right face out of a crowd in an environment that constantly changes - racing both against the clock and each other! The simple premise of this game is that you have to match up two identical Miis in a crowd using the Wii-Mote as a pointer. The game gets increasingly harder and as you move through the levels. One level involves having to identify the fastest-swimming Mii, which is a real synapse-snapper as your brain races to process the information on screen faster than your opponent’s. Pose Mii requires players to make their Mii characters fit into the shapes in the Wii bubbles. Pose Mii is equally as hard and perhaps even slightly more addictive than Find Mii. The psychedelic colours and quirky graphics involved in this puzzle make it instantly addictive. It’s both huge fun and incredibly childish, very similar to a “baby’s first match the shapes” game. Perhaps the best game in the pack, certainly technically, is Billiards.

This uses the Wii-Mote to simulate the movement of a pool cue, and it does it remarkably well. You take a top-down view of the table, then (in first person view, looking behind the cueball, as in actual billiards) you line up your shot on the white ball. After selecting the direction of the shot and the type of spin on the cue ball you simply pull back the Wii-Mote and hit the ball.

Other games included are Charge, where players have to hold onto a rampaging bull and try not to fall off! You steer a bull and make it jump by moving the Wii Remote in the right direction, attempting to knock over scarecrows on the way. Tanks, which also makes use of the Nunchuk controller, tests your strategic skills encouraging you to leave trails of mines for other tanks to stumble across. Wii Play also features a few more throwaway sports titles, including Table Tennis, Fishing and Laser Hockey (a cross between air hockey and ping-pong) all fun diversions and good ways of improving your skills with the Wii Remote, but none of these games are going to set your life on fire and you will instead return to the Shooting Range and Billiards games time and time again.

Big Brain Academy

Posted on May 6th, 2008 in Cheats by admin

Big Brain Academy (BBA) offers a number of difficulty levels and five brain-bending categories such as Mind Marathon and Mind Sprint that test the participant’’s brain power in areas including maths, logic, memory and analysis. Yep, rather than being a mere player, you are a participant, as BBA isn”t really a game as such.

Upon starting the game, new Academicals are invited to enroll using their own Mii. Dr Lobe (a talking brain lobe complete with spectacles, ”tache and a mortar board hat) will keep you up to speed with how well - or how badly - you are progressing at the academy. Initially, the first test checks how big your brain is by measuring you in 15 activities that span five mental categories. You”ll not only see your brain size, but you”ll also receive a grade based on your performance. Alternatively, Practice sessions are a great way to improve your skills in specific activities.

In Mind Sprint, two teams race to answer a set number of problems first. Using one Wii remote, one relay team of up to four players can compete against a student record book. Using two remotes, two teams of up to four people can compete. In Mental Marathon, any number between one and eight can strive to keep a winning streak going for as long as possible within a certain time limit. Once time runs out, or someone fails to solve a problem correctly, the marathon ends. The Brain Quiz is a party-style experience that spans the five mental categories, several difficulty levels, and adds five activities, making a total of 20. Up to eight players can divide themselves into four teams.

Big Brain Academy for Wii allows budding brainboxes to send and receive record books with friends who also own a copy of Big Brain Academy for Wii using WiiConnect24. Oh, and did we mention the talking Wii Remote function?

Posted on May 5th, 2008 in UK Shopping by admin

Crash is back, and this time he’s gone all titanic on us. It’s not easy being a… what sort of animal is the blighter? Whatever he is, it’s not easy for him. His arch nemeses - Neo and Nina Cortez - are back, and they’re up to no good. Namely, they’re mutating the local creatures into monstrous abominations. Crash, as you might expect, is having none of it. Crash of the Titans sees a host of new abilities thrown into Crash’s arsenal of moves. He can now do all kinds of acrobatic stuff, including punches, flying kicks, multiple attacks and special counter moves. That’s not all.

Also new is the ‘Jack to Attack’ mode, which will allow Crash to hijack the bodies of 15 enemies, gaining abilities such laser eyes, calling down lightning from the sky, impaling enemies on a scorpion tail and throwing toxic stink bombs. The game also features a two player mode that allows a second player to jump into the action at any time as Carbon Crash, with players even able to hijack each other!

Dave Mirra BMX Challenge

Posted on May 5th, 2008 in UK Shopping by admin

Things have been a bit quiet for the boy Mirra on the gaming front for a few years. After a string of releases sporting his name, it’s taken four years for Dave Mirra BMX Challenge to come to the Wii, which is a bit of surprise seeing as how his name arguably means more on the extreme sports scene than even that of the venerable Tony Hawk. Not to worry, however, because Mirra has blazed his way back onto the gaming scene with this latest BMXing title to bear his name, and on Nintendo Wii, you get 22 levels of action-packed gameplay, with a whole bunch of customisation and environment options. There’s also a splendid four-player split-screen option which could be more action than your TV can handle!

Dave Mirra rewrote the rules of what’s possible in the world of BMX. On the ground or in the act of catching air, the ‘Miracle Boy’ has redefined the boundaries of his sport and then promptly surpassed them. Now you can control the most successful X Games competitor of all time. You can challenge your friends in racing and freestyle competition and see who’s got what it takes to ride with the best.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08

Posted on May 3rd, 2008 in UK Shopping by admin

Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the green…there’s a Tiger about. It would, of course, be remiss of EA to let a golfing season slip by without getting Tiger Woods’ name onto a video game, and this year’s no different. This year there are upwards of 20 big name professional golfers lending their name to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08. Trying out their swing are Tiger Woods (in case you hadn’t guessed), Camilo Villegas, Vijay Singh, Annika Sorenstam, Christie Kerr and Morgan Pressel. There are, as ever, a wealth of courses for you to stretch your slacks-clad legs on, including luxury locations such as Westchester Country Club, TPC Boston, Cog Hill and East Lake. You’ll be able to live the golfing dream, rising through the ranks from amateur level through to bumping clubs with the best of the best on the PGA Tour. For the more hard-headed golfers picking up the game, there’s a feature EA is calling ’shot confidence’.

You’ll be able to analyse every hole, tracking your performance through every shot to see where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Exclusive to the Wii version of the game is the opportunity to to throw your mates off their swing using four new taunting mechanisms. It seems a tad unprofessional to us, but who are we to comment on an otherwise civilised game like golf?
